I wanted to get my boyfriend either a bracelet or ring for Christmas, but I don't have much money. I've been looking around, and I found a place that sells all kinds of jewelry, but has some really nice looking pieces that are pretty affordable, because they are 18k gold over sterling silver.

Is it just a waste of money to buy jewelry made that way? Will it become dull, tarnish, the gold rub off, or become crappy looking with lots of wear?

I went on a cruise a few months ago and my cousin and I brought bracelets back for our boyfriends. They were those "Inch of Gold" ones, I'm pretty sure they're gold over silver. My boyfriend wears his everyday and it has become quite dull.

I don't want to make the same mistake twice.

18K gold over silver jewelry will not last you forever as you already know. How long it will last you depends on the quality and the quantity of the gold plating on it. Gold in general (pure gold for example) is actually very soft compared with other metals. That is why even if you have pure 24K gold jewelry it becomes distorted out of shape. Gold plating will behave the same way. The pollutants added into it make it behave even worse. The gold plating will wear off in time. Most of the time it is just use and abuse. Chemicals and substances that come into contact everyday react with gold.

Especially if you are buying a ring or a bracelet, things like human sweat, dirt, smog form the air, water, and soap will undoubtedly come into contact with the gold. You can't really avoid them. So I am not telling you to go with something expensive. Just go with what you can afford and then simply get it polished/plated again, if it becomes too dull or if the gold starts wearing off again.

I make beaded jewelry and coin purses, etc. I have a friend who makes tye dyes and sells them at the Saturday market, and I would like to sell some of my stuff at his booth. What should I put on my business card? My name is Terra so I thought maybe "Terra's Beautiful Beads" but that is kinda boring. The tyedye shop is called "Those aren't my shoes".

Any suggestions?

Those shoes are his? :P JK
I like the name Terra's beautiful beads best.

Or maybe beaded beauty.

If you are twisting a single wire it must be SQUARE wire, not ROUND wire.

Round wire will twist, but because it is round, it won't look like you've done anything to it.

Square wire is what is used to get that lovely "diamond cut" appearance.

Square wire is available through most jewelry suppliers who sell wire and most refiners.

To twist square wire, use an electric screwdriver (safest) or an electric drill (one that has variable speed so you can twist slowly and safely) that has a chuck on it that can be tightened down to hold one end of the wire.

Place the other end of the wire in a vise or hold it with a pair of pliers if the length of wire is short enough. Pull the wire relatively taut between the screwdriver/drill and the vise/pliers. Begin to slowly apply power to the screwdriver/drill and twist till you get the appearance you are after.

Most wires (including silver, goldfill & gold) will work-harden as you twist them; the wire will become springier and less malleable. If you twist the wire enough it will break.

Always make certain you are wearing eye protection/safety glasses while working with the wire.

Good luck.

I do not purchase my supplies wholesale and sell directly to vendors at wholesale prices. As of now I am making very little per month but wondered when i would need to get a tax id? or WHAT exactly I would need to get. I am not a registered business but don't necessarily see a need to be… any advice?

your tax id number or resale id is needed if you sell retail or collect sales tax.

Check with your state and local government offices to make sure your doing things right.

If you're into crystal beads go into the Swarovski site and they have lessons and ideas.
Are you into wire work, or beading, or both?
The first site I gave you has everything and is printer-friendly.
