i am trying to make a bead and chain overdress for a senior thesis fashion show. I am trying to find someone who is experienced in working with wire and chain in jewelry making who might be able to give me some advice if i were to explain the project to them…it is very unique…and if anyone has any suggestions or knows any nice friendly jewelry teachers in the new york area it would help me a lot.
I've worked with metals for decades (also drafting clothing patterns ….), and beading for several years.
If you want to send me some sketches or whatever, I'll try to give you some useful ideas. I'm in northern British Columbia, thousands of miles from New York, so can't give hand-on help, but I'll do what I can.
You may want to look at the ads in 'Bust' magazine. There are so many interesting and innovative jewellers in NY. (What an opportunity!)
Sounds like you've got an interesting project going!
P.S. Just occurred to me a few hours later that magazines and books are other fertile resources. There is such a range, so many specializations. For example, there is a magazine called 'Simply Wireworking'.
There are websites too. The one belonging to 'Beadwork' magazine features both beading and beadworking.
Enjoy!

I design and make beaded jewelry. While I've had some success with my pieces (both the gemstone and glass beaded pieces), I'm wanting to expand my hobby into an actual business. Please let me know what kinds of beaded jewelry appeal to you. I make necklaces, bracelets, rings, anklets, earrings and toe rings. The rings & toe rings are still pretty experimental, but the others have designs well underway, and I've made sales in those areas.
Thanks everyone!
do what i do and just make what feels good to you and wear it so people can ask where it came from! i like the beading with wire around them but cant figure out how to do it yet.

So I can make some jewelry. The bead store I went to has the small cubes, one for 85 cents, which is a little pricey. Maybe I can find something cheaper online? Please help.
Hey hello,
I recommend livejewelrybids.com The live auctions start at $1 and you can get some crazy deals on authentic jewelry.
Hope this helps.

I like to make beaded jewelry and things with charms, mostly Sculpey, so I was wondering what is popular because I might start selling my jewelry. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, whatever. What do you guys like?
Just put a few things on artfire.com… it's free to sell and you can have up to 10 items on there at once, or unlimited for $7 a month. See how they sell on there. I personally have a store on etsy.com, I just learned about artfire. Make a good assortment and you'll learn what people want.

I want to buy more than just a few things at a time, and have heard a few people mention that they know people who buy beads, etc. wholesale in Tennessee. Does anybody know of any place that sells to people who have a tax number or a federal id number?
You can buy from the suppliers in Tennessee. You can search for the suppliers of jewelry from http://www.hellotrade.com/fashion-jewelry/ and contact them online for free.

I know this may be a stupid question but isn't the gold color on costume jewelry made of something else? Can you test it at home? There are no markings to indicate 14K, 10K or anything like that on the brooch or the necklace. Please don't tell me to take it to a jeweler.
Costume jewelry will look like costume jewelry as the years go by but did you know? Older gold jewelry has jewellers marks on it? Easy ways to distinguish are by looking at the locking mechanisms/or connecting piece on bracelets and necklaces. The other is by looking at the prongs and settings. Real gem jewelry usually is open underneath so the color of the gems can be seen in the light. You may have to use a magnifying glass to look for the 14k, 14gf, 10k, 10GF,(gold filled). Jewelry from other countries will have other marks.
People collect costume jewellery just as they do other items and many types are worth money. Because of the economic situation at present, everyone is trying to make money, ridding themselves of anything they think they can get money for, so places like Ebay are flooded with all sorts of things. Cameos are a fairly good example. If you have old jewelry that is turquoise rock, most likely it is the real turquoise. I had several small pieces from relatives in Montana who lived among the Blackfoot tribe. Have passed them on to Grandchildren already.

I am wanting to cast small pieces…jewelry pendants for example.
People who build models cast their resin pieces in silicone rubber molds, that you can make yourself….
Google resin casting..
