Archive for beaded jewelry making

I like to design hemp jewelry and am looking for beads that can fit on 2mm string or bigger. I want to buy them in bulk. I am interested in everything from wood to glass lampwork, stones, fancy plastic, etc. Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of some good deals. Its hard to find good deals for decent beads! If you can include links, that would help the most. thanks!!

I agree with FireMountainGems for bulk. For small quantities of unusual beads, you can check out www.orientaltrading.com, www.beadaholique.com, www.artbeads.com, www.goodybeads.com, www.beadtopia.com

Hi,

So for all of you crafty people, you know how when you make a beaded necklace or bracelet with beading cord and needle you tie the starting piece of cord to the clasp/closure and then you dab the knot with a drop of clear nail polish to seal it?

Will a natural water based nail polish work and have the same effect or do you have to use the regular nail polish with the chemicals and stuff?

P.S. I already know about beading glue, but I hate that stuff and the nail polish works great but I have a client who I am making a piece for and I am using only natural wooden and natural untreateated semi-precious stones and a natural beading cord and I told her about my method and she kind of freaked out over not wanting nail polish on her neck. I do prefer to use the nail polish method as it works better (in my own opinion and experience) than just tying it off and leaving it alone. That’s why I need to know if there is a "natural" alternative sealant I can use.

Some brands I have considdered are
honey bee gardens
suncoat
piggy paint
go natural

Let me know if any of you use any of these polishes for the nail polish method and if it works. I don’t want to waste my money on it and find that it doesn’t work, so I’m looking for someone who has tried it or uses it…

Thanks in advance!

My cousin is into the beaded jewelry and I do know she has used or still uses the clear water base polish or maybe she still does. I know she used for temporary style because it does become brittle and break away. I personally think the gel would would work better especially if it is for personal use.

this will be my first time in classes since i finished school. i know its only a hobby class but im nervous i wont get chatting to anyone. any tips on how i can relax a bit more. also has anyone done a class like this? what can i expect the college im doing it at don’t know anything as its a independent lady doing it and i have no contact details for her as it has to be booked through the college. thanks

I agree that crafters can be friendly and open in general. I always like to go around and see what everyone else is doing (different colors, etc.) which is an automatic interaction possibility, and you can also ask "how they did something" or "if they had any trouble with something" and let them show you (most people love that). Or ask if they do other kinds of beading/jewelry/hobbies and let them explain a bit.

Also, in any situation like that, try to look approachable yourself. Look people in the eye and also smile or at least have a pleasant expression, don’t stay alone with your head down and your mouth set, act like you like people, pay attention to what people are actually saying, be open about others’ work/personalities, etc.
In the "don’t" department, don’t go on and on and on about something, don’t hang on to one person too long if they don’t seem as enthusiastic (just being able to leave makes you less needy/more desirable, and "respects" them), don’t look around for other possibilities when you’re talking to someone, don’t judge or say negative things…stuff like that.

And remember too that some of the others may be feeling just like you do (everyone is insecure), so try and make feel *them* comfortable and welcome, which will make you a friendly person and also take your mind off of worrying about yourself as much.

Good luck!

I make beaded jewelry my dad sells some for me at work but we have Vacation Bible School Tomorrow through Friday. How do I approach people at church to get them to buy my jewelry?

Well you ask them if they would like to buy them any jewelry.

Start off by talking about how you like to make beaded jewelry and ask them if they would like any.

I am thinking of buying a book online…..I was wondering the size in letters (D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K,) that the crochet hook for making crocheted beaded jewelry is? Thanks for the help. :)
It depends on what type of thread you’re going to use to crochet with. The thicker the thread the larger the size of hook you will need. For most crochet jewelry you see online these days it is made with crochet thread #10 which require a crochet hook size of 0 or smaller.

If you want to break even, you have to charge at least the cost of supplies to make the item. If you want to make a profit, you have to add the cost of your labor in making the item.

So if supplies cost 5 dollars and you spent two hours making something, and you want to get at least 5 dollars an hour for your time, then you have to charge 15 dollars. Of course, items with more expensive components, and those that take longer to make will cost more, and may not sell as easily.

What are some good (and legit/safe) websites to buy beads, pendants and findings for jewelry making?

Thanks :)
As mentioned firemountaingems.com is great! You may also want to try artbeads.com and shipwreckbeads.com.

I have used all of these, amongst others, but these are probably my favorites. Artbeads offers free shipping, Fire Mountain has quantity discounts and good selection, Shipwreck is a little more expensive, but often has what the others don't when I'm looking for something specific!
