Archive for jewelry making bracelets

Recently I’ve started to make jewelry and want to start selling it. What is a reasonable markup? I’m going to try selling them on e-bay first to see if people like them.

My costs:
Total beads - $50.00
String - $4.00
filler beads - $10.00

Total costs - $64.00

$64.00 will make about 35 bracelets.

Do you think that $8.00 with $ 2.00 shipping is reasonable?

If I sold each bracelet at $8.00 x 35 = $280.00 (not including the shipping costs)
Which is a $216.00 profit.

Is that about normal? Am I selling them for too much? Too little?

Thanks.

Your prices sound very reasonable. But there’s one thing you did not include in your calculations - the time required to complete each bracelet. Your real profit would be what is left over after you deduct the cost of supplies and time. None of us who make jewelry can charge the way plumbers do - $80 an hour, or so - but do allow yourself at least minimum wage when you’re calculating costs. That way you won’t be working free - even for yourself.

Do you think this website is reliable?
http://www.jewelrysupply.com/
It just seems so cheap! because If you compare it to firemountaingems.com its just SOO cheap! and also at the bottom of everything it has this WARNING that says that the products may have lead in them and you should wash your hands every time you touch! is that tru for all jewelry? do I really have to do that or what?? and If im going to make a necklace is this all I need?:
chain (already finished)
swarvoski heart pendent
ice pick style leaf bail
one pearl
one round swarvoski bead
2 head pins
2 jump rings
-and if im going to make a charm bracelet is this all I need:
chain(unfinished)
toggle clasp
jump rings (do I use them to attach the clasp?)
headpins
pearl beads
swarvoski round beads
heart pendent
wolf charm
IM NEW TO JEWELRY MAKING SO IM NOT SURE IF I’VE GOT ALL I NEED. if I need anything else please tell me! THANKS!

Hello there,

I am not familiar with that supply house. I have done silver work for a few years and have bought from Rio Grande since the mid 70s. I compared your site to Rio Grande on a commonly used basic item to check the price. 2mm sterling beads. You use lots of them if you make ear rings, necklaces or do anything with liquid silver.
Rio Grande base price is $0.078
Jewelry Supply Co. base price is $0.098

I did not find Jewelry Supply Co. to be cheap. They do sell in small quantities. But if you are making jewelry to sell, you are buying in mid to large lots.

About the lead warnings. There are now laws requiring disclosure of lead content in jewelry. Also laws prohibiting the sales of lead content jewelry to children. Nearly all base metal findings have some lead in them. Use at your own risk. Frankly, I found that if your earrings rot the customers ears or your bracelets turn their wrist green, the customers do not come back (except to ask for their money back). I always stayed away from base metal findings. Silver, gold, gold rolled, and surgical steel cost more, but they are worth more. You get what you pay for. You are going to invest your time in your pieces of jewelry. You want those pieces to reflect yourartisticc skill. Using base metal findings I never thought made a good reflection on the artist. It said cheap.

I take it you like Swarvoski jewelry. There are other beads available without lead. You may want to consider using pearls or natural stone beads also. There is a lot to talk about in the way of findings. Your needs will vary with the designs you have in mind. Also, you need to give some thought to your tools. Really not enough room here to discuss all that.

If you wish to pick my brain, please feel free to email me through the link in my profile.

Later,

Hello again, I see someone answered while I was writing my answer. Allow me to comment on that answer. Buying jewelry at a thrift store is not a viable method of obtaining sufficient supplies to manufacture jewelry. I mentioned the lead disclaimer. Here is a link to more information on that subject. Go down to item 16 Lead Content.

About the jump rings. Those are wire circles. You simply bend one side of at the cut sideways to attach an item. Then bend it back in place. You do not bend it so that it distorts the circle shape. Also, buying jump rings is all right if you will not use many. If you plan to use a lot, you want to make them. Simple. In a minute or so, you can make a hundred of them.

I once went to a little store somewhere in NYC not to long ago. They specialize in charm bracelet’s they had every imaginable charm for sell extremely cheap. I’ve been wanting to make a charm bracelet and kind really find any other places where they sell the charms I want. Or if you know of any other stores that specialize in selling jewelry making things. I would prefer if it were a store I could go to. And yes I already know that Micheal’s sells some of this stuff.

Hi Ali,
if you do not mind to shop online, i would recommend you this online store for jewelry making things. http://www.8season-supplies.com

My friend’s birthday is coming up and I want to make her bracelets and things out of caps of classic old coke bottles. I’ve already gotten the caps, but I can’t figure out how I’d make the jewelry. I know that it’s possible to make bracelets from the insides of the caps (I have yet to be able to perfect it), but I’m talking about the actual caps. Drilling holes might work, but I don’t have a fancy drill or anything.

You don’t need a drill :) Just use a hammer and a nail to pierce your bottle caps.

I found a Youtube video that shows you how to make bottle cap charms:

You can make earrings, pins, magnets and necklaces too:

There are so many ways to use bottlecaps! Here’s some more:

And finally some examples of bottlecap bracelets. You can work out how to put them together from this video:

HTH! Have fun!

I like to make jewelry. Friendship bracelets, and from things i fond around the house, other old jewelry and beads and things from the craft store. Its good looking stuff and I want to sell it to make some spending money, but I dot know how to go about it. I am a 17 year old college freshman =)

do not listen to those people. plain and simple. Find a few local established small businesses and let them sell it for you. give them a cut probably around 40% just mark it up and play on the hand made aspect. keep prices firm and have a good name very catchy. I would put it in beauty shops or very clean retail. maybe 3 close towns with 3-5 locations to sell. Be ready though it might blow up and you might need help when you are selling 20-30 pieceses a week.

How did that work out?
Thank you in advance!

Hi, i recently got my start-up kit from dawn jewellery, and please dont waste your money!!! Its a total rip off. I got enough beads to make 5 bracelets and they are way to hard to make. they dont tell you that there are NO REFUNDS, plus you have to order the beads from them to make the bracelets it costs you $70 to order enough beads to make 1 box of bracelets and there is no way that you could make the 30 bracelets even if you took a whole month. If you want a job that you can work from home go to workopolis. com and type in "work at home" in the search bar. They have tonz of ligit work at home jobs with real companies like rogers wireless even. But Please dont waste your money on Dawn Jewellery!

I’m making these to make extra money but how much should i charge for each bracelet? Here’s the link on how they’ll look. And the buyer can choose the charms they want or anything else like that.
http://www.how-to-make-jewelry.com/bracelet-making.html
Thanks!

depending on how much time it takes to make them. but stress that they are handmade. i would say 5 dollars and it comes with one charm. a dollar or two for each charm after that, and do a deal where you can buy three bracelets for 12 dollars or something like that,
