Archive for jewelry making supplies

Okay so I am making vintage style jewellery, so things from my vintage charms etc. but I am looking to find things such as envelopes that say I love you when you open them & those roses you see everywhere as shown here: http://eclecticeccentricity.bigcartel.com/product/play-it-again-radio-brooch

any ideas ? I swear I’m missing this website/s ? HELP.

Have you tried going out to etsy.com yet? If you search for vintage charms it pulls up a wide variety of charms including the rose cabachons I believe you are looking for.

I’ve been interesting in making my own jewelry for quite some time now but never really knew how or where to start. There are no classes offered anywhere near my home that show you how to do it so that’s not an option. Can anyone give me some tips, maybe how to do it and where to buy supplies? also if anyone has pictures that would be great! thanks

Well you can go to your local craft store and get books or just google it. There are tons of web sites out there to get books and supplies. I too learned from a book and it was the only book I had purchased. I got it through that book of the month club. I think it was well worth the purchase. Any instructions will do though. There are basic instructions all over the internet as well.

As far as getting supplies, you can go to:

Firemountaingems.com (At firemountaingems you get a free gift with every order. Its great!), Anybeads.com (at anybeads they have a small selection but the beads can often be purchased for $1. I just bought every color they had for $1 each and I was very happy with the beads) Artbeads.com, fusionbeads.com and like I said, Google, and TONS of others will pop up

If you get a chance to get the Swarovski beads, which are sold at almost every beading site, these are the best and the most beautiful. They are a little expensive but depending on what site you get them from. You can go to www.swarovski-crystallized.com to get them or possibly find them cheaper by google. Type in: Online beading supplies and a whole bunch will pop up. Be choosy about what sites you pick though. Some are a LOT more expensive than others. Also look at the quantity you get for the price.

You can get ideas by doing the same thing. Either type it in the search box and get the full sites or type it in and click on images. You can view other jewelry that people have made. Some actually let you download the designs and instructions for the jewelry.

Another thing to remember. Don’t buy all your supplies at one place. Some sites can offer better deals at different times and you can also find some things at places like WalMart, Joanne Fabrics, and check out your local phone book. There may be a local crafting supply store where you can buy this stuff really cheap. I go to a little place called Pat Catans. It’s in Pa. But I am sure there are places all over.

I’m going to start my own jewelry making business. I was wondering what the best place was for supplies? Would Michael’s craft store be good? The only problem I have with that store is that it might get a little pricey. So I guess like wholesale might be good? But, I don’t know how large the business will get so I don’t want to purchase too much at once.
The jewelry I plan to make will have sort of an indie, trendy, vintage, edgy feel. If you can understand the combination of all those things…haha.
I live in the Chicago area so local businesses would be helpful as well.

Thanks!

Someone suggested Rio Grande, and I agree. (http://riogrande.com)
You’ll not be able to buy tools wholesale from a store like Rio even with a tax number.
A tax number doesn’t allow you to simply buy wholesale, it allows a retailer to buy products she means to resell and collect taxes on to, in turn, pay the state sales taxes on.

The good news though is that the Interstate Commerce Clause (U.S. law) forbids states not having stores in the state you reside charging you their state’s (or your state’s) sales tax. But then there’s shipping…

I also like Stuller (http://stuller.com) but they’re hard to open an account with if you have no history in the trade.

I strongly suggest registering with the JBT (http://www.jewelersboard.com/)

Also, check out http://www.ganoksin.com/
There’s a wealth of jewelry information there.

PS, I’ve been a jeweler for over 30 years and never had a tax number. I am strictly wholesale to the trade and neither collect sales tax nor pay it.

i would like to be able to buy some beads and findings for my daughter, anyone know where you can get them from in birmingham or solihull city centres.

Thank you x

Hi, I’m at university and I’m doing some jewellery making. I found this shop in the jewellery quarter that has some good stuff http://www.jewelsandtools.co.uk/ You can order online and pick up in the shop if you don’t want to pay for delivery (they used to have a discount for online purchases, I don’t know if they still do - you’ll have to double check)

I’m not sure what it is called that I am looking for, but what it is is a metal pendant that I can glue onto inside or even the outside (on top) to make my own jewellery. I am looking for all different shapes and more to the larger size.

www.firemountaingems.com they have everything!

hi i make beaded jewellery and i have a lot and i need a good way to store findings , tools , wire , string stuff and beads . thanks

Hello there,

I have purchased several of the plastic trays that have divided compartments. Those work well for smaller findings. For beads, I use empty jars (we use a lot of Rolaids so I have a good supply of nice sized jars). Baby food jars are a good substitute. Any small-ish jar that you have several of will work.

I have a pegboard on the wall over the workbench with metal loops for my tools. But, they usually end up laying around on the work bench. Periodically, I will clean up the workbench and put everything back in its place.

For my wire, I keep it coiled and keep the coils in folders (the common folders for filing). I keep the folders in a small metal file folder box. I like the folders because I can label the folder tabs. Makes it easier to find the gauge wire you want.

I have a small plastic hinged top box that I use for sterling scrap (filings and scrap pieces). I don’t recall what came in it, maybe cigars.

Also, I picked up a pillcase for $1 at a yard sale. It is the kind of case that has compartments for morning and evening pills for a couple weeks. Why I like it, is that it has separate lids for each compartment. I plan to use it for beads (and the like) that I keep in small quantities (too few to merit a jar).

Something along the lines of different types of beads and stones, some nice white gold necklaces etc…

I have a concern about lead though, I noticed a bunch of warnings on this site about lead in Swarovski jewelry…

Like this: http://www.jewelrysupply.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=35_3042_459_2408&products_id=15148

Im looking for a heart shape like this but am only coming up with that brand with the warning…I dont care if I have to pay more.

I am having trouble finding that exact heart style, but what you are looking for is going to be quartz crystal or "non leaded crystal." Leaded crystal, like Swaroski, sparkle more than other crystal. They add lead to increase the sparkle. The first website below has some more info on the lead in Swarovski. The second website is the best place I’ve found to buy jewelry making supplies (to answer the first part of your question!).

I am visiting the Bullring shopping centre in Birmingham (UK) this weekend and want to know if there are any shops selling loose beads and jewellery making supplies? I make my own beaded necklaces etc and expect Birmingham is brimming with such shops but I do not know the area.

Any advice (with directions) would be great.

Thanks :-)
