I’ve used soldering irons before for work but that’s it. My knowledge is pretty slim, any Information you have and are willing to share would be much appreciated

Again my question is…Can soldering irons be used for jewelry making?

I’m interested to learn about making jewelry. I’ve searched for some workshops online, but either it’s not really reliable or it’s very expensive. Any of you know of (beginner) lessons that are good and reasonably priced? Preferably if you have taken that particular lesson before so I can be ensured with the quality! (how helpful the teacher is, how clear is the explanation, bla bla bla) thank’s very much!

what?

I am just learning to make metal jewelry; and I know sterling silver wire is probably the best, but I want to start out with something cheaper so I can practice mess up and learn before I spend a lot of money.

I am looking for something malleable, so that I can hammer it and make it flat.

Also I would prefer a thicker gauge.

Thanks!

Try copper. If you're looking just for small quantities, consider using solid core electrical wire (not the stranded sort used for lamp cord). Just peel off the insulation.

I am going to Saugatuck, Michigan soon. Is there anywhere to purchase beads for jewelry making?

Not in saugatuck, but my wife uses fire mountain gems which is a jewel supply wholesaler.

I've always wanted to make my own jewelry, mainly since I can't wear nickel, I struggle to find cute things without any metal at all…even nickle-free bothers me to a point. I was thinking of making something for both my mom and my mom in law for mother's day this weekend. I have access to a Hobby Lobby and a Jo-Anns. What should I purchase to begin? Thanks!

making jewelries of your own is really fun. you can customized them uniquely according to what you want.

What can be used as a top overlay when making jewelry w/ photos?
Im making pendents and bracelets that have photos inserted and im looking for something that I can use to cover the image and make the iteam look more apealing. The size is 13×18 and I like the appearence when using clear cabochon but I cant find the size I need. Does anyone know of something else I could use

I've used plain thin picture frame glass but your oval would be hard to cut. and I've used laboratory slides. Another way is to place your pictures, words, beads and such in a bottle cap (the pop off kind) and fill with resin. And don't forget to punch a small hole for the jewelry rings.

Hi

Im from north london and was wondering if any of you can help me, I really want to start making my own Jewelry and have no idea how to start this, I am hoping to maybe get a couple of my own stalls or even hire out a section in shops etc, I really like funky/different styles of jewelry and just really want to start doing this. Any advice on how to start, maybe any courses around north london that anyone knows off?

Thanks.

Before worrying about the business side you need to just teach yourself the skills. You just need to buy some basic tools (a pair of round-nosed pliers, a pair of flat-nosed pliers and some cutters). Just get some books out of the library and practise the techniques. I am sure some of the colleges and adult education centres in London will run courses. You need to concentrate on getting your skills perfect and on discovering your own style before launching into the business side of things.

I am trying to get in to making hama jewelry to earn myself a little more money over the summer holidays I can find everything else I need in HobbyCraft at the fort but I can't find metal chains to put the pendents I made on. Any ideas?

try e-bay.

or I buy trace trains made by beadalon, there are many sites to use, the one I use most is Just Beads and also mailorder-beads.co.uk, if you buy the trace chains you will need to buy jump rings and fastenings, I recommend just beads for these.

they are quite inexpensive and good quality.

How should I set up a jewelry making work space? I make custom jewelry and do most of my work off the kitchen table. Have done it that way for years. However, with my up and coming business, I'd like some ideas on how to become more efficient.

Thanks!

Here is the kind I make:

My friend has a big plastic set on the floor and it has wheels storage box with clear drawers for storage. And a little storage box with little drawers for her beads, she groups them by color. The hardware store has stuff like that, check it out.
Get a wall board from the hardware store with hooks on it for finished products, so you can hang them up out of the way so they will not get tangled. You could hang your tools there, too.
I use those plastic storage boxes with dividers, I keep all the findings of one color in each box, I have my gold, and silver boxes. And I will soon have one for copper and odd color findings.
Then I use the boxes to store leftover beads. I use baggies to store repair projects, to keep from losing anything, and I use the baggies for proposed projects, too.
I have 3 bead boards, and the room to leave them out, to wait for inspiration to strike, and to always have an emergency one for a fast project.
I keep all my tools in one box, and keep them at hand, close to me, same with my findings boxes.
If you want to get fancier and have shelves, or have a closed cabinet with shelves inside so you can put your stuff in and close the door, that is great. if you need space for packaging and wrapping finished products, or an area and storage to ship things, or to keep presentation boxes, keep that in mind.
Go online to find models, and check out Martha Stewart, either her show or the website, she has got a custom craft area. I hate her, LOL. My crafts are all stored fairly well, but some are in one closet, some in another, some in an old matal kitchen cabinet, and some in an old stand up metal cabinet. wish I had a big room for it all. And my sewing stuff is all separate, and on a different floor!
