Looking into making my own jewelry…thinking about wire working?
Wondering if someone could pass on information about classes in Penna.?
Thanks!
Also, where can I buy the wire? Aluminum, Bronze, Silver, Copper, bench blocks and rawhide hammer? I have most of everything else that is needed for basic jewelry making, although now that i’m thinking of it, I may need a more clean look????
LOL, i have done a little research on what i need, couldn’t find the average cost though….i’m assuming (as in all my *other* hobbies) that this WILL BE EXPENSIVE!
But i’m semi-prepared, Looking forward to making my creative workings come to life!
Thanks for considering my questions.
Peace and Love to all of you!
Since I don’t know your city, it is difficult to answer. I used my favorite search engine http://clusty.com and entered ‘Pennsylvania wire working class", which produced quite a few results. You could try this search and scan for locations near you or where you would be willing to travel. Or, repeat the search using your city/location.
Also, there are amazing tutorials online if you like that style of learning. I did a search for wire working tutorials. This site looks good — http://www.how-to-make-jewelry.com/making-wire-jewelry.html.
Wig Jig is amazing — http://www.jewelry-tools.com/WJU/techniques/index.html — but from your description of tools this may not be the way you wish to go.
Try Fire Mountain Gems for tools and supplies. I have bought some tools from Harbor Freight — jewelry size anvil for about $3.00, pliers for $2.00. Lots of fun finds.
Michaels sells several kinds of wire — I work at a NextGeneration Michaels and we have an expanded beading department with aluminum wire in about 10 colors and German-style wire and now have dapping tools.

Which jewelry wire to use for this?

I am making earrings and shaping the earring myself with jewelry wire. Mostly hoops and teardrop shapes. But my wire will not hold it’s shape when I wrap it with thread. Where can I get jewery wire that will hold its shape when wrapped with thread. I need a stiff wire that won’t bend out of shape when it is formed into the shape I need it to be. Peruvian thread earrings to be exact. Best place with lowest prices, since I’m just starting and my budget won’t allow very expensive wire. Thanks!
you can use 18 or 20 gage wire. I buy it at micheals is should be about $4.00. try getting a book from your library on beading, it should tell you more specifics.
