I’m going to start my own jewelry making business. I was wondering what the best place was for supplies? Would Michael’s craft store be good? The only problem I have with that store is that it might get a little pricey. So I guess like wholesale might be good? But, I don’t know how large the business will get so I don’t want to purchase too much at once.
The jewelry I plan to make will have sort of an indie, trendy, vintage, edgy feel. If you can understand the combination of all those things…haha.
I live in the Chicago area so local businesses would be helpful as well.

Thanks!

Someone suggested Rio Grande, and I agree. (http://riogrande.com)
You’ll not be able to buy tools wholesale from a store like Rio even with a tax number.
A tax number doesn’t allow you to simply buy wholesale, it allows a retailer to buy products she means to resell and collect taxes on to, in turn, pay the state sales taxes on.

The good news though is that the Interstate Commerce Clause (U.S. law) forbids states not having stores in the state you reside charging you their state’s (or your state’s) sales tax. But then there’s shipping…

I also like Stuller (http://stuller.com) but they’re hard to open an account with if you have no history in the trade.

I strongly suggest registering with the JBT (http://www.jewelersboard.com/)

Also, check out http://www.ganoksin.com/
There’s a wealth of jewelry information there.

PS, I’ve been a jeweler for over 30 years and never had a tax number. I am strictly wholesale to the trade and neither collect sales tax nor pay it.

Hi i am just starting to make my own jewellery and i was wondering if the more experienced could help me with a few things.

1. When i join a pendant to a chain etc, i found that the jumprings didn’t close totally, i was worried that the pendant or chain could come off, so now i use double jump rings. What is the proper way?

2. When i am making earrings etc, i use an eyepin which has one loop but i have to make the loop at the other end to attach the ear hook. The first loop i use to attach a charm.

How can i make my loop look professional? It seems to look a bit messy, i can’t bend the loops small enough! Is there a special type of pliers i should use?

3. Does anyone have some close up photos of the way they close and attach jump rings and the way they deal with making loops.

Hope that made sense!

Thanks so much :)
1. I would use a split ring instead of a jump ring.

If you are using a jump ring, use two pair of pliers or a jump ring opening tool and twist the two ends away from one another, reverse to close. Never pull the ends straight away from one another. For instance, with the opening facing you, you would pull one end toward you and push the othe away from you.

2. You want round nose pliers. Having added your beads et al and cutting the pin to the needed length, bend the end of your pin at a 45 degree angle then grabbing the end of the wire curve around the tip of your pliers moving down the wire to complete the loop.

I would actually wire wrap for added security. In stead of cutting the pin follow the basic directions above, but form your loop a little high on the pin and continue wrapping the end around the wire 2 or 3 times, keeping your wraps close but not overlapping. Of course, if you do this, you’ll want to make your own eye pins from scratch so that both ends are wire wrapped.

3. firemountaingems.com or beadandbutton.com should both have video tutorials for all of this. You might also consider your local library for books or periodicals on the subject as they would contain photos and diagrams that would be most helpful!

I hope this helps! Good luck and happy jewelry making!

I once went to a little store somewhere in NYC not to long ago. They specialize in charm bracelet’s they had every imaginable charm for sell extremely cheap. I’ve been wanting to make a charm bracelet and kind really find any other places where they sell the charms I want. Or if you know of any other stores that specialize in selling jewelry making things. I would prefer if it were a store I could go to. And yes I already know that Micheal’s sells some of this stuff.

Hi Ali,
if you do not mind to shop online, i would recommend you this online store for jewelry making things. http://www.8season-supplies.com
their products are reasonable and the quality are good.

?

In my local hobby stores they have actual molds right next to the resin. The cavities are kind of "jewel" shaped, square, rectangle, round and ovals in various sizes. There’s also a 2 part molding compound that allows you to make your own molds from found objects- buttons, coins, door knobs, etc.

I want to start making jewelry necklaces, earrings, bracelets as a hobby I know they sell a lot of tools to help you with, Can someone give me the absolute "must have" tools you need also ones that will be used a lot!
i know it depends on what type of jewelry i want to make, im not quite sure of that yet, i know i don’t want to work with clay, im thinking wire work and possibly beading.
thank you

Okay, so I started beading a few years ago and i found that these are the three most important tools to have:
* round nose pliers (used for making loops in wire)
* flat nose pliers or chain nosed pliers (used for holding and bending wire at right angles) i use both, but either is probably ok for starting out. Chain nose pliers are good because they have a small tip allowing you to do more detailed work.
* flush cutters (used to cut wire)
there are of course many other tools which make beading/wire work easier such as nylon jaw pliers, crimping pliers and many others but these three are really the ones you need to start off with

you can also get pliers which are 3-in-1 type of things which include many different tools in the one. but these can be more expensive

as with all tools, prices range from cheap to really expensive professional ones. Most people say to by good tools to start with because they’ll last longer, but if your like me and at first didn’t really know what to do, sometimes the cheaper, not-so-good options are better just until you really know what you want to do.

also, you can probably buy the three pliers I mentioned in a set. That’s how i first bought mine.

Another thing to look out for is that the pliers don’t have serrated edges as this can damage and scratch the wire or findings.

Other must have equipment is basic jewelery findings (earring hooks, clasps, etc) this makes it easier when you suddenly have a fantastic idea, you have some of the necessary items already available. Again these come in a range of materials making them cheap or expensive. As i only make jewellery for myself, i don’t mind having clasps which are not sterling silver as it makes my jewellery a little bit cheaper but once i got into it, I did buy some more expensive tools as it does make everything easier.

hope this helps :)

P.S i also prefer buying form shops rather than use online shopping, i HATE ebay! lol
I’m from Newcastle!

Do you have a Hobbycraft store near you. They are large out of town stores and stock just about any hobby and craft accessories that you can think of. Have a look in your Yellow Pages.
