For something nice like that, I would use wire. I only use stretchy nylon cord for kids' jewelry. A lobster claw or a barrel clasp would work.
References :
What you can use is called tiger tail by beadalon. It is nylon thread twisted on stainless steel and very easy to work with. You will need a crimp plier and some crimps beads but it is more durable and flexible. This is the wire that I choose to work with it comes in silver plated and gold since you are working gold plated bead you should get the gold plated tiger tail.
References :
I make lots of jewelry and I only use wire, it is the best and easiest in my opinion! I also love barrel clasps, but with barrel clasps they sometimes rub so much on your skin that they unhook themselves, so you might want to consider using a simple latch hook.
Good luck and have fun!
References :
If you'd like to see some of my work, you can check out my myspace which has photos of them on the bottom left hand side of the page. www.myspace.com/julieadderley

I would use the wire, it makes a more quality product and would last alot longer. Use and finding or clasp that you like, just make sure you have extras to practice with!!!! Try different things until you find one you like and comfortable with making. Good Luck!
